About the High School Young Artist Competition

The High School Young Artist Scholarship Competition (HSYAC) is open to any Michigan flutist in grades 9 - 12 who is currently a SEMFA member and who has not previously won the first prize. The applicants must be available to perform at the SEMFA festival on Saturday October 6, 2018. Six finalists will be selected on the basis of recorded auditions. Judges will award, at their discretion, first, second, and third cash prizes in the amounts of $400, $250, and $100. The first prize winner will also perform in a masterclass for our featured guest artist at the SEMFA festival.

High School Young Artist Competition Application

1. Prepare one UNEDITED HIGH QUALITY mp3 recording of your performance to be submitted via email. Edited recordings will be disqualified.
2. Fill out the application form on the following page 
3. Pay $30 non-refundable application fee (along with $15 student SEMFA membership dues if you are not currently a SEMFA member) by check or PayPal. Checks should be made payable to SEMFA (Southeast Michigan Flute Association)

Deadline: September 22, 2018

Requirements and Regulations

Considerations:

  • Previous 1st place winners of the HSYAC are ineligible for this competition.
  • The final round is open to the public.
  • Finalists must provide their own accompanist.
  • Finalists agree to appear at the SEMFA Festival at their own expense.
  • Programs for live round not to exceed 15 minutes
  • Six finalists will be chosen for live round at SEMFA Festival, October 6, 2018 

Required Preliminary Repertoire:

  • Eight Etudes de Salon by Johannes Donjon, #6 Pasquinade (any standard edition, suggested edition: Little Piper
Final Live Round Repertoire: 
  • Eight Etudes de Salon by Johannes Donjon, #6 Pasquinade (any standard edition, suggested edition: Little Piper)
  • A piece of applicants choice (if accompanied, the piece must be performed with accompaniment)
