About the High School Young Artist Competition

The HSYAC is open to any Michigan flutist in grades 9 - 12 who is currently a SEMFA member and who has not previously won the first prize. The applicants must be available to perform at the SEMFA festival on November 11, 2017. Six finalists will be selected on the basis of recorded auditions. Judges will award, at their discretion, first, second, and third cash prizes in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100. The first prize winner will also perform in a masterclass for our featured guest artist at the SEMFA festival.

To Apply
1. Prepare two (2) UNEDITED HIGH QUALITY mp3 of your performance. Edited recordings will be disqualified.
2. Download the application form HERE.
3. Pay $30 non-refundable application fee (along with SEMFA membership dues if you are not currently a SEMFA member) by check or PayPal.
4. No speaking is allowed on the recording.

Deadline: All Materials must be postmarked or emailed by the deadline date of October 27 (extended), 2017.  Semifinalists will be notified by November 3, 2017. 


Requirements and Regulations


  • Previous 1st place winners of the HSYAC are ineligible for this competition.
  • The final round is open to the public.
  • Finalists must provide their own accompanist.
  • Finalists agree to appear at the SEMFA Festival at their own expense.


1. REQUIRED PIECE:  Telemann Fantasia No. 2 in A minor, TWV 40:3. Suggested edition: Little Piper. Repeat required. Ornamentation optional. 
2. One piece of applicant’s choosing
Recorded Preliminary Round:
Deadline October 20, 2017
Maximum length not to exceed 15 minutes. Please record movements of multi-movement works as separate tracks.
Final Round:
SEMFA Flute Festival November 11, 2017
Repertoire for the program not to exceed 15 min.
Same repertoire as Preliminary Round.
Live: Six (6) finalists will be chosen.
